A visit from The Mayor

On Tuesday 2nd December we had a very special very special visit from an important person

- The Mayor of Hetton.

He told us all about the hard work done by Hetton Local and Natural History society.

The book is called 'The Hetton Village Atlas - A community, its history and landscape.

It has kindly been donated to our school to help us with our local history.

Mrs Toole collected the book on behalf of the school.

It was very heavy at 600 pages long!

Don't lose that medal!

We all asked questions and found out lots of information about our local history and the Mayor!

Author comes to school.....

Mr Waugh, who has written many children's book, came to visit year 5 again and helped us understand more about Jessica's Other World.  He explained how he developed the charcters and thought about the plot of the book.  As we are nearing the end of the book, the children wanted to know if the 'Other World' will be explained.  Mr Waugh said that many books do not explain how children have moved from one world to another.  He gave examples of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe as well as Alice in Wonderland.

Class 4 have written their own settings based on Jessica's Other World and will also be writing their own mystery adeventure story based on the book. The children have recently been set a quiz based upon the book and anyone who completes the quiz will be able to be part of a raffle for one of Mr. Waugh's books.  The raffle will be drawn the last day before May half term.

Mr. Waugh has agreed to come back again and work with the class looking at his new book and giving their opinions about it.  The children are very excited about this.

Mr Waugh also read some of his book to the children and they took part in activities to try and think about how the main character Jessica may have felt living in two different worlds.

Mr Waugh has agreed to come back to class 4 again and complete some work about one of his other books.

The children all sent letters to Mr. Waugh to thank him for coming and told him what they liked about his books.  They were very excited indeed to receive a letter back and the first few chapters of a new book..........
